Pletna boat to Bled Island
Hand-rowed wooden boats have crossed to the island for centuries. Climb the 99 steps and ring the wishing bell in the church.

Bled Castle
Slovenia's oldest castle, perched on a 130m cliff. Go for the terrace view rather than the modest museum inside.

Vintgar Gorge
A boardwalk pinned to the wall of a 1.6km limestone canyon. Timed tickets must be booked online; it sells out in summer.

Walk the lake circuit
A flat 6km loop, about 90 minutes with stops. Do it at dawn and you will have the island reflection almost to yourself.
Kremsnita cream cake
The custard-and-cream slice was invented here in 1953. Slascicarna Zima and the lakeside terraces both do the classic version.

Getting there
Bus from Ljubljana
The easiest option: roughly hourly direct coaches take 75-90 minutes and drop you at Bled bus station, five minutes from the lake.
Train to Lesce-Bled
Trains from Ljubljana reach Lesce-Bled in about 40 minutes, then a short local bus or taxi covers the last 4km to the lake.
Airport transfer from LJU
Ljubljana airport is only 35km away. GoOpti and other shared shuttles run door to door in about 40 minutes, often cheaper than a taxi.
When to go
Best time to go
Late May-June and September: swimmable lake, green hills, manageable crowds
Cheapest months
November-March, when the lake is moody and the hotels half empty
Priciest & busiest
July-August, when day-trip coaches from Ljubljana arrive nonstop
If you've got one day
Morning
Start at Vintgar Gorge on the first timed slot, before the coaches. The boardwalk is genuinely quiet at opening time.
Late morning
Back to the lake and take a pletna across to Bled Island for the 99 steps and the wishing bell.
Lunch
Lakeside terrace lunch at Vila Preseren on the Veslaska promenade, then the obligatory kremsnita afterwards.
Afternoon
Climb 20 minutes to the Mala Osojnica viewpoint. This is the shot everyone comes for, and most visitors never do it.
Evening
Dinner in town, then a drink on a lake terrace. Bled goes quiet early: the nightlife is the water, not a dancefloor.

Radovljica
A perfectly preserved medieval core 7km away, with an oddly excellent Beekeeping Museum and a chocolate festival each April.
Vrsic Pass and Kranjska Gora
The 50-hairpin alpine pass starts an hour west. Open roughly May-October and one of Europe's great mountain drives.
