Ben Nevis
The UK's highest mountain at 1,345m. The Mountain Track is a long, serious day out; check the forecast first.

Nevis Range gondola
A cable car up Aonach Mor with a restaurant at the top. The easy way to a big mountain view; parking is charged.

Glenfinnan Monument and viaduct
An 18m monument to the Jacobite clansmen on Loch Shiel, plus the viaduct viewpoint. Paid parking, and it fills fast.

Getting there
West Highland Line train
From Glasgow Queen Street in about four hours across Rannoch Moor. One of the world's great rail journeys.
Caledonian Sleeper from London
Overnight service, the train splitting at Edinburgh. You get breakfast as you come through the mountains.
Drive from Glasgow via Glencoe
Around two and a half hours on the A82, straight through Glencoe. The drive is half the reason to come.
When to go
Best time to go
May, June and September: long days, drier hills, manageable midges.
Cheapest months
November to March, though hill routes then need winter skills.
Priciest & busiest
July and August, when the steam train and Ben Nevis both fill up.
If you've got one day
Morning
Out to Glenfinnan for the monument and the climb to the viaduct viewpoint.
Late morning
Time the viewpoint for a steam train crossing, then look down Loch Shiel.
Lunch
Back on Fort William High Street, or the cafe at the Glenfinnan visitor centre.
Afternoon
Nevis Range gondola for the Ben Nevis view without the eight-hour walk.
Evening
Dinner by Loch Linnhe, then a pub with the hill forecast pinned up.
Nearby & day trips
Glencoe
Half an hour south on the A82, and worth a full day of its own for the walks and the visitor centre.
Mallaig and the Small Isles
End of the road west, with CalMac ferries on to Skye and to Rum, Eigg, Muck and Canna.
