Castillo San Felipe del Morro
Six levels of ramparts, tunnels and sentry boxes above a huge kite-flying lawn. Buy the combined ticket with San Cristóbal. Ages 4 and up.
Balneario El Escambrón
A reef-sheltered public beach with lifeguards, showers and calm water, ten minutes from Old San Juan. Parking fills early at weekends. Any age.
Museo del Niño, Carolina
A hands-on children's museum near the airport with outdoor exhibits and a shaded play area. Suits ages 2 to 10.
El Yunque rainforest
Forty minutes east: short paved trails, a roadside waterfall and an observation tower. Some sections need a timed reservation. Ages 5 and up.
Car seats and rain
Buses stop at the city edge and car seats are legally required. Afternoon showers are brief; restaurants serve from six, unlike much of Latin America.
