Two intersecting streets behind the Clérigos tower holding most of the city-centre bars, where the crowd stands outside with drinks rather than staying in one room. Walkable from São Bento; busiest Thursday to Saturday and loud until the small hours.

Fourth floor of the Art Deco building at Rua Passos Manuel 178, opposite the Coliseu: gallery, restaurant, bar and club in one, with a terrace over the centre. Open Monday to Wednesday 12:00–24:00, Thursday to 02:00, Friday and Saturday to 06:00, closed Sunday.

The lodges on the Gaia bank — Taylor's and Graham's among them — run guided cellar visits and tutored tastings, and both sit high enough to drink with the city opposite. These are late-afternoon and early-evening, not late-night: book ahead and go before dinner, not after.

Rem Koolhaas's concert hall at Av. da Boavista 604-610, with symphony, baroque, jazz and electronic programming most nights and a bar in the building. Guided architecture tours run daily 10:00–17:30 if you would rather see it than hear it.

Bars in the Baixa fill from around 23:00 and clubs from about 02:00, so an 21:00 arrival means an empty room. Plan a long dinner first, and note the Gaia lodges and the metro's last services run on a completely different clock to the bars.
