A river, a wooden tram, an aquarium at the sea and a bridge to walk — Porto scales down well.
Sea Life Porto
A modest aquarium beside the beach at Foz with a tunnel and touch pools. An hour and a half; best for ages 2–10.
Tram 1 to Foz
A wooden 1930s tram runs along the river from the Ribeira to the sea in about twenty minutes. Sit at the front; any age.
Six-bridges river cruise
Fifty minutes up and down the Douro from Ribeira or Gaia, and about the cheapest boat trip in Portugal. Ages 3+.
Parque da Cidade
A large urban park running down to the sea at Matosinhos, with lakes, ducks, cycle paths and a beach at the far end. Free; any age.
Steep, wet and early
The gorge means stairs everywhere; the Gaia cable car and the Guindais funicular save legs. Restaurants serve dinner from seven, earlier than Spain.
