Porto is the cheapest of Portugal's cities — a river gorge, port lodges and beds under thirty euros.
Baixa and Cedofeita
Hostels concentrate in the Baixa around Rua das Flores and out towards Cedofeita, both ten minutes above the Ribeira and considerably quieter.
What a day costs
Dorm €16–28, a francesinha or prato do dia €9–13, metro about €1.60 on an Andante card. Around €35–65 a day, roughly $40–75.
Getting around cheap
The Andante card covers metro, bus and the suburban train to Matosinhos; the metro from the airport takes half an hour for a couple of euros.
Free by day
Crossing the upper deck of the Dom Luís I bridge, the Jardins do Palácio de Cristal, and the cathedral terrace. Port lodge tastings are not free.
Rua Galeria de Paris
The street where the whole city drinks outdoors; hostel walking tours leave from the Clérigos tower a few minutes uphill.
