Benfica and Sporting
Benfica at the Estádio da Luz, Sporting at Alvalade, a kilometre apart on the same metro line. The Primeira Liga runs August to May.
Lisbon's road races
The half marathon crosses a Tagus bridge in March and the marathon runs in October, both finishing along the river at Belém. Entries open months ahead.
Surf at Carcavelos and Ericeira
Beginner beach breaks at Carcavelos, twenty-five minutes by train; Ericeira, an hour north, is a designated World Surfing Reserve with a serious autumn swell.
Futsal, seriously
Portugal takes futsal seriously and both big clubs field teams; tickets cost a few euros and the standard is far higher than the venues suggest.
