Football along the coast
The nearest league club is Portimonense, twenty minutes east; the Primeira Liga runs August to May, and the Estádio Algarve hosts internationals and friendlies.
Volta ao Algarve
A professional stage race held in February, climbing the Alto do Malhão inland. Roadside viewing is free and the region fills with training teams.
Surfing the west coast
Beach breaks at Sagres and along the Costa Vicentina work all year; schools run half-day lessons from Lagos, and the autumn swell is the largest.
Kayak, dive and SUP
Kayak tours to the grottoes leave from Praia da Batata beside the old town, and dive centres work reefs and a scuttled navy ship off Portimão.
