THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in Zakopane, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
Autumn view over Zakopane with the Tatra Mountains behind the town
Villa Koliba
Kościeliska 18. Witkiewicz's first Zakopane Style house, now the museum of the style itself. Small, strange and genuinely lovely.
Pęksowy Brzyzek cemetery
A tiny old graveyard of hand-carved wooden markers where Zakopane's artists, guides and mountain rescuers are buried. Free and quiet.
Wielka Krokiew ski jump
The 1925 ski jump above town, still hosting World Cup nights. Walk up beside the inrun for a properly vertiginous look downhill.
Chochołowskie Termy
A big thermal pool complex 25km west, with outdoor pools facing the Tatras. Open late, and the answer to a rained-out day.
Sarnia Skała
A short, steep two-hour climb from town to a rocky viewpoint at 1,377m, with a full Tatra panorama and a fraction of the crowds.
