Imperial Castle
Kaiser Wilhelm's 1910 pile, now a rambling culture centre with a cinema, cafes, gardens and the 1956 Uprising museum in its cellars.

Getting there
Fly Poznań (POZ)
Ławica airport sits 7km west of the centre. City buses reach the main railway station in around 25 minutes; a taxi takes about 15.
Train from Warsaw or Berlin
PKP Intercity runs Warsaw to Poznań in about 2.5 hours, and Berlin to Poznań in under 3 hours on the direct EuroCity service.
Break the Berlin-Warsaw run
Poznań sits on the main line between the two capitals, which makes it the obvious one- or two-night stop instead of a long train day.

If you've got one day
Morning
Stary Rynek early for the painted facades and arcade coffee. The town hall itself is closed for restoration, so admire it from outside.
Late morning
Walk east to Ostrów Tumski for the cathedral, then Porta Posnania's account of how the Polish state started right here.
Lunch
A St Martin's croissant is a snack, not a meal. Pair it with pyry z gzikiem, potatoes with curd cheese, at a milk bar.
Afternoon
The Croissant Museum show, then the Imperial Castle's gardens and cafes, or the Musical Instruments Museum back on the square.
Evening
Beer at Ułan Browar, dinner at Mielżyński, then jazz at Blue Note inside the castle or DJs and dancing at Tama.

Gniezno
Poland's first capital, 50km east and under an hour by train. Its cathedral holds the 12th-century bronze Gniezno Doors.
Kórnik and Rogalin
Two estates south of the city: Kórnik's neo-Gothic castle and arboretum, Rogalin's thousand-year-old oaks and picture gallery.
