PICK YOUR BASE
Kraków's bases are all within a few tram stops of each other, so the choice is really about noise, price and how close you want to sleep to the tourist crush.
Stare Miasto — inside the Planty ring
The medieval core: the Main Market Square, Wawel Hill and almost every tour meeting point within a ten-minute walk. You pay the highest rates in the city for that, and on Floriańska and Szewska you hear the stag parties until the small hours. Worth it if you only have two nights and want to walk everywhere.

Kazimierz — the old Jewish quarter
Twenty minutes on foot south of the square, or three stops on tram 3 or 24. Synagogues, the food hatches around Plac Nowy and the densest bar strip in Kraków, which is exactly the trade-off: more character and cheaper rooms, but Friday and Saturday nights run late. Ask for a courtyard-facing room.

Podgórze — the south bank
Five minutes over the Bernatka footbridge from Kazimierz. Ghetto Heroes Square, Schindler's Factory and MOCAK are here, along with quiet residential streets, real grocery shops and lower rates. The sensible choice with children or on a longer stay.

Sleep by a tram line, not by the square
The tram network is dense and a 24-hour zone I ticket covers the whole city for 20 zł, so Grzegórzki, Krowodrza and Zabłocie put you 10–15 minutes from the Old Town at a fraction of central prices. Check the walk from the nearest stop before booking — plenty of listings sold as 'Old Town' are in Nowa Huta.
