ON A BUDGET
An archipelago where every beach is a boat ride, and the boat fares are the real daily cost.
Waterfront houses of Bocas town
Bocas Town, Isla Colón
Hostels line Calle 3 and the waterfront on Isla Colón, some built out over the water. Isla Carenero, two minutes by taxi, is quieter and cheaper.
What a day costs
Panama uses the US dollar: reckon $30–55 a day — a dorm $12–20, a comida corriente $5–8, and water taxis $3–6 a hop.
Water taxis and lanchas
Fixed-fare launches connect the islands until early evening, then prices climb. The mainland lancha to Almirante takes half an hour and meets the buses.
Free by day
Playa Istmito is a twenty-minute walk from town, Bluff Beach is a bike ride, and the sunset from the town dock costs nothing.
Aqua Lounge, Carenero
The over-water hostel bar across the channel, reachable by a one-dollar taxi, is where the archipelago's travellers reliably collect after dark.
