THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in Wahiba Sands, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
Wind-rippled sand dune under a clear blue sky in eastern Oman
Sandboarding
Most camps keep boards and it works better on the steeper faces near the crest. Included at some camps, charged at others.
Meet a Bedouin family
Camps arrange visits to households still living in the sands, with camel milk and coffee. Go through the camp so the payment reaches the family rather than a fixer.
Quad bikes and fat bikes
Rented at the desert edge near Bidiyah and at some camps. Noisy, not the reason to come, and popular with families.
Sunrise from the camp dune
Colder and better than sunset, and the ridge is yours because almost nobody gets up for it.
Muqal cave
Ten minutes over slippery rock above the upper pools at Wadi Bani Khalid. Bring a torch: there is no lighting and the floor stays wet.
