No settlement for tens of kilometres. Camps put loungers out on the sand; bring a jacket, because the temperature falls hard once the sun is down.

A buffet or set Omani dinner round a fire, usually with an oud player or drums laid on. Included at most camps as part of the room rate.

Some camps roast lamb underground for the evening meal and serve Omani coffee, dates and henna before it. Ask when booking whether it falls on your night.

Ten minutes out from camp and the lights vanish. Take a torch, note your direction and do not go far: dunes look identical in the dark.

Assume camps are unlicensed unless they say otherwise, and there is nowhere within an hour selling alcohol. Check the policy before booking if it matters.
