THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in Salalah, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
Limestone cliff above clear turquoise water on the Dhofar coast
Ayn Athum
One of the seasonal springs and waterfalls in the hills behind the city, running only while the monsoon does. Dry and unremarkable the rest of the year.
Jebel Samhan
A viewpoint above 1,700m over the escarpment, inside the reserve that holds Oman's remaining Arabian leopards. You will not see one; the drop is the reason to drive up.
Taqah Castle
A 19th-century governor's house on the coast east of the city, restored with its rooms, kitchen, watchtowers and prison laid out. Small, and quick.
Wadi Dawkah
A protected grove of Boswellia sacra north of Salalah, and the source of the resin this whole coast traded on for centuries. Part of the UNESCO inscription.
The beaches out of season
October to February brings 25-30C, clear skies, empty sand and hotel rates a fraction of khareef. The green has gone; the water and the light are better.
