THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in Nizwa, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
Nizwa Fort and its date-palm oasis below the Hajar Mountains
Oman Across Ages Museum
A large modern national history museum at Manah, about 20 minutes out. Galleries open Saturday-Thursday 9am-5pm and Friday 1.30-7pm; OMR 5 for tourists, and you must hold a booked ticket to enter them.
Falaj Daris
One of five aflaj inscribed by UNESCO in 2006 and the largest in Oman. An open channel through a public park in Nizwa; the system still divides water between households on a timeshare.
Birkat Al Mouz
A collapsing mud-brick village at the foot of the Jebel Akhdar road, with Falaj Khatmein, another of the five inscribed aflaj, running through the palm gardens.
Jebel Akhdar village trail
The W4 links Al Ayn, As Sah and Ash Sharayjah along old farm paths across the terraces: about 8km and three to four hours, with a 4x4 needed to reach the start.
Bahla pottery
Bahla has made unglazed clay pots for centuries and the workshops still sell at the roadside below the fort. Bulky, cheap, and impossible to fly home unwrapped.
