The painted street in the centre — each facade a different colour — lined with bars and cafés on both sides, two minutes from the harbour. This is where most Stavanger evenings start.

Beer bar at Skagen 21 with 21 taps, cask ale and a 165-page beer book updated about ten times a year. Tue–Thu 15:00–01:30, Fri–Sat 12:00–01:30, Sun–Mon 15:00–midnight.

Rock club at Nedre Strandgate 5 with regular live bands; open Wednesday to Saturday 22:00–03:30, 20 years minimum because of the licence.

Student culture house that has been putting on concerts since 1988, plus a Tuesday quiz and Wednesday stand-up in the cellar. Tickets go through its own site and some nights are free.

Bar on Øvre Holmegate with secondhand books along the walls and a yard at the back; coffee in the daytime, packed late at weekends.
