Oil money made it costly, but the beaches, painted streets and Pulpit Rock trail stay free.
Storhaug and the centre
Cheap beds sit around the harbour and in Storhaug just east; the lakeside hostel at Mosvangen is quieter and a bus ride from the centre.
What a day costs
NOK 700β1,100 a day, about $65β105: dorm 350β500, groceries 200β300, local buses 40β110. The Pulpit Rock trip adds transport on top.
Kolumbus buses and ferries
One Kolumbus ticket covers city buses and local ferries; the Tau ferry and connecting bus is the cheap way to the Preikestolen trailhead.
Free by day
The white lanes of Gamle Stavanger, the painted shopfronts of Γvre Holmegate, and the Preikestolen hike itself β only the car park charges.
Γvre Holmegate
A single short street of coloured buildings and small bars where hostel crowds and locals overlap; the harbour quays fill on light summer evenings.
