Oslo punishes the careless wallet, but the fjord, the forest and the sculpture park cost nothing.
Grünerløkka and Tøyen
The hostel cluster sits east of the Akerselva — secondhand shops, kebab counters and cheap beer by Oslo standards, fifteen minutes from Central Station on the tram.
What a day costs
Budget NOK 700–1,100 a day, roughly $65–105: a dorm bed 350–500, self-catered food 200–350, a 24-hour transit ticket around 130.
Ruter tickets and Bysykkel
One Ruter ticket covers metro, tram, bus and the Nesoddtangen ferry — a cheap fjord cruise in disguise. Oslo Bysykkel city bikes run April to November.
Free by day
Vigeland Sculpture Park never closes and never charges; the Botanical Garden at Tøyen and the walkable marble roof of the Opera House are also free.
Stortorvet and river bars
Free walking tours gather by the cathedral on Stortorvet most mornings; the group usually dissolves into the cheaper bars along the Akerselva afterwards.
