Volunteer-run student culture house at Olav Kyrres gate 49 with two bars, Grøndahls and Stjernesalen, and a programme of concerts, quizzes, film nights and debates. You do not have to be a student to go in.

Concert and club venue for electronic and experimental music at Østre Skostredet 3, run by the Ekko association; the hall is on the second floor and there is a lift. Ekko's own festival takes over the venue at the turn of October and November.

Student-run rock club in a former bomb shelter cut into the hill below Nygårdshøyden, running since 1969. It opens for gigs and club nights rather than every evening, so look up the programme before walking up there.

Independent record shop trading since 1976 — the name means record bar, and the Bergen shop doubles as one, so you can drink while you flick through the racks. Quiet early, busier late.

Narrow lane in the centre lined with small bars, cafés and independent shops; the part of town to aim for if you want somewhere to sit and talk. Bien Litteraturhuset at Østre Skostredet 5 is one of the dependable ones, open Mon–Sat 11:00–23:00.
