Bergen · Backpacking

ON A BUDGET
Rain, fish and seven mountains — the expensive parts are optional if you walk uphill instead of riding.
Colourful Bryggen wharf houses in Bergen
Marken and the station
Cheap beds cluster between the train station and Marken's wooden lane, ten minutes from Bryggen on foot and close to the airport bus stop.
What a day costs
Reckon on NOK 700–1,100 daily, about $65–105: dorm 350–550, groceries and a bakery lunch 200–300, transit 40–120 if you use it at all.
Skyss and the Bybanen
One Skyss ticket covers bus and the Bybanen light rail, which runs to the airport for a fraction of a taxi. The centre is walkable end to end.
Free by day
Walk up Fløyen in forty-five minutes rather than paying for the funicular; the Bryggen alleys and the fish market cost nothing to wander.
Torget fish market
The harbour square is where free walking tours form and where hostel groups end up; the surrounding bars run student prices on weeknights.
