THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in Haarlem, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
The De Adriaan windmill on the Spaarne in Haarlem
Corrie ten Boom House
The watchmaker's house on Barteljorisstraat with a hiding place built into a bedroom wall, where one family sheltered people during the occupation. Small guided groups only; check the tour times before you turn up.
Molen De Adriaan
A rebuilt windmill on the Spaarne at the edge of the old town, open for tours, and the best view back across the roofs to the church.
Saturday market
The Grote Markt fills with stalls on Saturday morning: cheese, flowers, stroopwafels and fish, all packed away again by late afternoon.
Haarlemmerhout
A wooded park south of the centre, claimed as the oldest public park in the country, ten minutes on foot and used almost entirely by locals.
Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen
A large dune reserve between the city and the sea, open on foot only and with a day ticket, full of fallow deer at first light.
