The national collection at Museumstraat 1, open daily 09:00-17:00. Adults 25 euros, free for anyone 18 and under, and you need to book a start time even though walk-up tickets are sometimes available. The Gallery of Honour and the Night Watch are the crush; the 18th-century rooms are usually empty.

Museumplein, next door to the Rijksmuseum, holding the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings, drawings and letters anywhere. Entry is by timed slot booked on the museum's own site; the last two hours of the day are consistently quieter than the middle.

Westermarkt 20, the canal house where the Frank family hid, open daily 09:00-22:00. Adults 16.50 euros including the booking fee, sold online only for a specific time slot through the museum's own site, with all tickets for a date released six weeks ahead at 10:00 on a Tuesday. There is no door queue to join.

The film museum at IJpromenade 1 in Noord, directly opposite Centraal. The F3 ferry to Buiksloterweg from behind the station is free and takes under five minutes, then it is a three-minute walk. Exhibition 16 euros, free under 18, open Tue-Sun 10:00-19:00 and closed Mondays; the cinema and restaurant run later.

Around 260 stalls along Albert Cuypstraat in De Pijp, Monday to Saturday 09:30-17:00 and closed Sundays and public holidays. Running since 1905, and about ten minutes from Centraal on the Noord/Zuid metro line to De Pijp. Free to walk, and the cheapest lunch in central Amsterdam.
