SIESTA TO FIESTA

Pokhara

ASIA ยท FIESTA SIDE
Nepal's easy-going second city: a lake with the Annapurnas reflected in it, paragliders overhead all afternoon, and Lakeside bars that run late.
Brightly painted wooden boats moored on Phewa Lake, Pokhara
Nightlife โ†’Things to do โ†’

The plan

Row out on Phewa Tal
Hire a doonga at Lakeside and paddle to the island Tal Barahi temple. Machhapuchhre reflects best at dawn.
๐Ÿ“ Map & photos ยท โ‚ฌ
Sarangkot sunrise
Ridge viewpoint 10km up for dawn over Annapurna and Machhapuchhre. Drive up, or ride the Annapurna Cable Car.
๐Ÿ“ Map & photos ยท โ‚ฌ
World Peace Pagoda
White stupa on the ridge across the lake. Boat over and walk up in 45 minutes, or take a taxi the long way round.
International Mountain Museum
Four halls on Himalayan climbing history, the eight-thousanders and mountain cultures. Genuinely good, and rarely busy.
๐Ÿ“ Map & photos ยท โ‚ฌ
Davis Falls and Gupteshwor
The river vanishes underground into a gorge, then reappears in a Shiva cave shrine across the road. Slippery underfoot.

Getting there

Fly from Kathmandu (PKR)
Buddha Air flies KTM-Pokhara in about 25 minutes. The new terminal handles domestic traffic only; no scheduled international routes yet.
Tourist bus, 6-8 hours
Daily tourist coaches leave Kathmandu early morning on the Prithvi Highway. Use a reputable operator and avoid night buses.
Trek in or out
Pokhara is the road-head for Annapurna. Jeeps for Nayapul and Ghandruk leave from Baglung bus park in the north of town.

When to go

Best time to go
October to November and March to April: clear peaks and prime trekking weather.
Cheapest months
Monsoon June to September - the Annapurnas vanish behind cloud, prices halve.
Priciest & busiest
Peak autumn trekking season, and Nepali holiday weeks in October.

If you've got one day

Morning
Taxi up to Sarangkot before first light for the Annapurna range turning pink, then breakfast on the way down.
Late morning
Boat across Phewa Tal and climb the shaded path to the World Peace Pagoda for the reverse view.
Lunch
Rooftop or lakefront lunch on Lakeside - dal bhat, momos or a proper coffee before the afternoon.
Afternoon
Tandem paraglide off Sarangkot and land at Pame, or swap it for the Mountain Museum if the wind is wrong.
Evening
Sunset drinks by the water, then live music at Busy Bee Cafe, Lakeside's twenty-year institution.

Nearby & day trips

Poon Hill trek
Classic 4-5 day teahouse loop from Nayapul for a dawn Annapurna-Dhaulagiri panorama. Guide and ACAP permit needed.
Begnas Lake
Quieter lake 30 minutes east, with hill walks and almost none of the Lakeside crowd.
