Sunrise from the ridge
Be outside by 5.30am in autumn. Most hotels face east, and your own terrace often does the job perfectly well.
Nagarkot View Tower
Steel tower at the high point of the ridge, a 30-40 minute walk south, giving the full 360-degree panorama.

Hike to Changu Narayan
Downhill 3-4 hours through pine and terraced fields to Nepal's oldest temple. Mostly signposted; carry water.

Sunset over the valley
The west side of the ridge looks back over the Kathmandu Valley - quieter than the dawn scrum, often better light.
Do nothing, at altitude
This is a one-view town. Book a room with a balcony, bring a book, and let the cloud come and go.

Getting there
Taxi from Kathmandu
32km east, about 90 minutes by private car. Most people fix a return fare with the overnight wait built in.
Bus via Bhaktapur
Local bus to Bhaktapur, then a second up the hill. Cheap, crowded, and 3-4 hours all in.
Walk up from Changu Narayan
A steady 3-4 hour uphill hike along the ridge from the temple - much the best way to arrive.
When to go
Best time to go
October to early December: the clearest, driest air and the sharpest mountain views.
Cheapest months
Monsoon June to September, when the ridge is usually inside a cloud.
Priciest & busiest
Autumn weekends and Dashain, when half of Kathmandu decamps up the hill.
If you've got one day
Morning
Up before 5.30 for the alpenglow. Coffee in hand, layers on - the ridge is properly cold before dawn.
Late morning
Walk south along the ridge road to the Nagarkot View Tower once the light has flattened out.
Lunch
A long lunch on a hotel terrace facing the mountains. There is no restaurant scene here beyond the hotels.
Afternoon
Start the downhill hike to Changu Narayan, or nap and save it for the morning.
Evening
Sunset on the western side, then dinner and an early night - this is a sunrise town.

Bhaktapur
Forty minutes downhill and the natural pairing: sunrise up here, medieval old city all afternoon.
Dhulikhel and Namobuddha
Another ridge town to the southeast, with its own Himalayan view and a hilltop Buddhist monastery.
