Maya Devi Temple
The white shrine over the marker stone where the Buddha was born, plus the Ashokan pillar and Puskarini pond. NPR 700.

Sacred Garden Bodhi tree
Ancient tree draped in prayer flags beside the pond, with monks and pilgrims meditating beneath it all day.
East Monastic Zone
Theravada monasteries from Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Cambodia, each built in its own national style.
West Monastic Zone
Mahayana and Vajrayana temples - the German, Korean and Chinese Zhong Hua monasteries are the standouts.
World Peace Pagoda
White stupa at the far north end of the park, past the crane sanctuary. Cycle up, or take a rickshaw.
Getting there
Fly to Bhairahawa (BWA)
Gautam Buddha International Airport is 25km away, about 30 minutes by taxi, with domestic flights from Kathmandu.
Bus from Kathmandu or Pokhara
Six to nine hours either way, around NPR 700-800. From Chitwan it is 5-6 hours and much the easier leg.
Overland from India
Sunauli, 22km south, is the main crossing from Uttar Pradesh - Gorakhpur and Varanasi are the usual approaches.
When to go
Best time to go
November to February - the Terai is cool and dry, and the light is soft.
Cheapest months
April to June, when Terai heat pushes past 40C and visitors stay away.
Priciest & busiest
Buddha Jayanti in April or May, when pilgrims fill every bed in Lumbini Bazar.
If you've got one day
Morning
Be at the Sacred Garden at opening. Shoes come off in the Maya Devi enclosure, and it is enforced.
Late morning
Hire a bicycle or an e-rickshaw and start up the central canal through the East Monastic Zone.
Lunch
Eat back in Lumbini Bazar - the park itself has almost nothing, so carry water at the very least.
Afternoon
West Monastic Zone, then north to the World Peace Pagoda and the Lumbini Museum.
Evening
Return to the Sacred Garden for evening chanting, once the day-trip coaches have gone.

Tilaurakot
Ruins of Kapilavastu, the palace city where Siddhartha grew up, 27km west. Atmospheric and nearly deserted.
Chitwan National Park
Five to six hours east, and the obvious next stop on a Terai route rather than backtracking north.
