Montenegro's highest town: a plain ski-and-hiking base at 1,450m, ringed by the Durmitor massif, eighteen glacial lakes and the Tara canyon.
The plan
Circle the Black Lake
A flat 3.5km loop through pine forest under the Medjed cliffs, 15 minutes' walk from town. Park entry is about EUR 5 a day.

Curevac viewpoint
A short trail 30 minutes from town ends on a cliff edge around 1,000m above the Tara canyon. Best at sunset, and free.
Raft the Tara
Half-day trips run 25km of rapids: wild during the April-June snowmelt, family-friendly and turquoise by July. From about EUR 60.

Savin Kuk chairlift
The ski lift runs in summer to about 1,900m, cutting out most of the climb toward Durmitor's best-known ridge walk.

Drive the Durmitor ring road
An 80km alpine circuit over the 1,907m Sedlo pass, past the Susica and Piva canyons. Allow four hours and a full tank.
Getting there
Bus from Kotor or Podgorica
Two direct Kotor-Zabljak buses a day, roughly four hours. Services from Podgorica via Niksic are more frequent and faster.
Drive from the coast
About three and a half hours from Kotor via Niksic and Savnik. A car is near-essential for the park's viewpoints and passes.
Fly Podgorica (TGD)
The nearest airport, roughly two and a half to three hours by road. Tivat works but adds summer bay traffic to the drive.

If you've got one day
Morning
Walk out to the Black Lake before the day-trippers and do the 3.5km loop while the water is still glass.
Late morning
Drive or hike to Curevac for the drop into the Tara canyon, then carry on up towards the Sedlo pass.
Lunch
Back in town for kacamak and cicvara, the local cornmeal-and-cheese dishes, in a wood-panelled konoba.
Afternoon
Ride the Savin Kuk chairlift for the ridge view, or start a longer walk out to the Jablan and Zminje lakes.
Evening
Nothing here is a club. Grilled lamb, an open fire and rakija on a terrace, with the temperature dropping fast.

Djurdjevica Tara Bridge
The famous 1940s arch 24km north, with ziplines over the canyon. It is shut for reconstruction until 26 October 2026.
Piva Canyon and Lake
A turquoise reservoir and tunnel-riddled road towards Pluzine, 90 minutes west, and some of the best driving in the country.
