The plan

Wooden-boat tour from Virpazar
Two to three hours through lily channels and past the Grmozur island prison, usually with Vranac, from about EUR 20-25.
๐Ÿ“ Map & photos ยท โ‚ฌโ‚ฌ
Pavlova Strana viewpoint
The horseshoe river bend everyone photographs, on the road between Cetinje and Rijeka Crnojevica. Best light early or late.
Rijeka Crnojevica
A near-silent riverside village around an 1853 stone bridge, with the quietest and prettiest boat trips on the lake.
Taste Vranac in Virpazar
Family cellars pour the local red with cheese and prsut. Masanovic, in the village, claims ten generations of winemaking.

Getting there

Train to Virpazar
The Belgrade-Bar line stops in the village: 30 minutes from Podgorica, 20 from Bar, EUR 2-4. Slow, cheap and very scenic.
Drive from Budva or Kotor
About an hour over the mountains via Cetinje and the Pavlova Strana viewpoint, or faster through the Sozina tunnel to Bar.
Bus from Podgorica
Regular buses cover the 25km in 30-40 minutes for EUR 2-3 and drop you in Virpazar itself. Easiest option without a car.

When to go

Best time to go
May, June and September: birds, warm water, uncrowded boats
Cheapest months
November to March, quiet and very wet, with little open
Priciest & busiest
July and August, when water lilies and day trips both peak

If you've got one day

Morning
Take the first boat out of Virpazar for the lily channels and the best chance of pelicans before the wind gets up.
Late morning
Walk up to the ruined Besac fortress above the village for the view over the causeway and the reed beds.
Lunch
Smoked carp or grilled bleak at a Virpazar konoba, with a glass of Vranac from a cellar down the same street.
Afternoon
Drive the mountain road to Pavlova Strana for the horseshoe bend, then drop down into Rijeka Crnojevica.
Evening
Dinner by the old stone bridge at Rijeka Crnojevica, or back in Virpazar. This is a lake, not a nightlife town.

Nearby & day trips

Cetinje, 25km
The old royal capital: a small town of embassies turned museums, plus the road up to Njegos's mausoleum on Lovcen.
Murici beach
The lake's best swimming, on the wilder southern shore below Albanian-speaking villages, about an hour from Virpazar.
