Climb the city walls at 07:00
1,350 steps to San Giovanni fortress. The gate opens at 7am May-September: go then for shade, empty ramparts and gold light.

Cable car up to Lovcen
An 11-minute gondola lifts you from the bay floor to the Njegusi plateau. Book a time slot online; they fill on multi-ship days.

Boat out to Our Lady of the Rocks
Half-day speedboat trips from the quay take in the Blue Cave, Mamula fort and Perast's island church. Go on the first departure.

Getting there
Fly Tivat (TIV)
The coastal airport is only 8km away, about 15 minutes by road. Taxis and pre-booked transfers run roughly EUR 20-35.
Fly Podgorica (TGD)
Montenegro's year-round hub, around 90 minutes by road, with far better winter and shoulder-season flight choice than Tivat.
Bus from Dubrovnik
About five buses a day, under two hours, EUR 13-30. Croatia is in Schengen, so allow one to three hours at the border in summer.

If you've got one day
Morning
Be at the walls gate for 7am and climb to San Giovanni before the ships dock. Back down by 9 for coffee on Arms Square.
Late morning
Wander the lanes to St Tryphon and the Maritime Museum, then find the Cats Museum for a small, very Kotor detour.
Lunch
Escape the walls to the Dobrota promenade and eat seafood at a konoba by the water, about 15 minutes on foot.
Afternoon
Ride the cable car up to the Lovcen plateau for cool air and a bay-wide view, or cross to Muo and swim off the rocks.
Evening
Ships sail by about 4.30pm and the town resets. Dine inside the walls, then drink in a lane bar until well after midnight.

Perast, 12km up the bay
The bay's prettiest village and the jumping-off point for Our Lady of the Rocks. Blue Line buses cost around EUR 1.50.
Lovcen and Njegusi
The old royal mountain: Njegos's mausoleum at 1,660m, 25 hairpin bends, and the village that cures Montenegro's best prsut.
