FIESTA SIDE
Cancún's night splits cleanly in two: ticketed mega-clubs on Boulevard Kukulcán in the Hotel Zone, and cheaper, later, far more Mexican bars downtown.
Turquoise surf on a Cancún beach
Coco Bongo
Show-and-club hybrid in the Punta Cancún strip, built around acrobats, tribute acts and an open bar rather than a dance floor. Tickets and tables are sold in advance through its own site; turning up cold means a long queue.
Señor Frog's Cancún
The long-running party restaurant-bar in the Hotel Zone: loud, sticky, heavy on group games and yard glasses. Fine if that is the plan, grim if it is not.
Mandala Cancún
Asian-themed club in the Punta Cancún cluster near Forum, part of a small chain that also has rooms in Playa del Carmen, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta. Doors are late; check the schedule and dress-code page before going.
Parque de las Palapas
Downtown's evening square: taco and marquesita stalls, balloon sellers, live bands and families out late. It costs nothing, and the R1 or R2 bus gets you there from the Hotel Zone.
Avenida Nader
Downtown street with a run of small bars, cantinas and craft-beer places where Cancún residents actually drink. Prices are a fraction of the Hotel Zone and it stays busy at weekends.
