Sprawling market for textiles, silver and street food. Best before 11am. Haggle gently and expect to pay in cash.

Cycle the Mekong riverfront
Flat, easy riding along Fa Ngum Road past temples and the promenade. Bikes rent cheaply from guesthouses in the centre.

That Dam black stupa
A crumbling brick stupa marooned in a roundabout near the US embassy, said to house a dragon. Two minutes, but very Vientiane.
Wat Si Muang
The busiest working temple in the city and its spiritual heart. Locals come to make offerings; join respectfully or simply watch.
Lao cooking class
Half-day classes with a market tour cover laap, tam mak hoong and sticky rice. Book through your guesthouse a day ahead.
