Vang Vieng has no team in Lao League 1. The nearest top-flight football is in Vientiane, about an hour away by fast train; fixtures are listed by the Lao Football Federation.

The longer, steeper alternative to Nam Xay, on the west side of the river: roughly an hour of hard uphill on rock and roots to a series of platforms over the valley. A fee is collected at the trailhead. Go early or late, and take more water than you think you need.

A flat-then-rough ride of a few kilometres east of town on dirt tracks to a small waterfall and swimming pool. A mountain bike is enough in the dry season; after rain it is a scooter job.

Two dry caves north-west of town reached on foot across the paddies from the village of Na Thong, with a lagoon on the way. Bring a head torch and proper shoes; there are no lights or handrails inside.

October to April is the window: low clear river, dry trails and reliable balloon flights. From May to September the Nam Song runs fast and brown, kayaking and tubing get cancelled and limestone turns slick. Plan the adventure days for the dry months.
