Eating here is cheap and unfussy: a nightly market of grill stalls, riverside terraces for the view, and one farm restaurant that has outlasted every trend in town.
Vang Vieng night market
Sets up in the centre of town daily from about 5pm to 10pm, busiest between 6pm and 8.30pm. Grilled meat and fish, sticky rice, noodle soups, spring rolls and fruit shakes, all cash only.
Nam Song riverside terraces
The bamboo-decked restaurants on the east bank do laap, fried rice, noodle soup and Western standards with the karsts in front of you. You pay a little extra for the view rather than the cooking.
Organic Mulberry Farm restaurant
The restaurant at the long-running organic farm a few kilometres north of town, known for mulberry shakes and mulberry-leaf dishes. Easy to combine with a lagoon run on a scooter.
Learn what to order
The Lao staples are laap (minced meat with herbs, lime and toasted rice), tam mak hoong (green papaya salad, ask for it mild) and khao niao, sticky rice eaten by hand from a lidded basket. Sticky rice comes with almost everything.
