PICK YOUR BASE
One road, one bridge and two river banks — the choice is really between being near the food and agencies, or being somewhere quiet with the karsts in the window.
Misty limestone mountains above the river at Nong Khiaw, Laos
South of the bridge, west side — the traveller strip
The stretch below the bridge holds most of the guesthouses, the restaurants and the trekking agencies, so you can book tomorrow and eat tonight without walking far. It is also the loudest part of a very quiet town, which is not saying much.
South of the bridge, east side — river-view rooms
The opposite bank, where places such as Nong Kiau Riverside face the water and the cliffs. Quieter, a little dearer, and still only a five-minute walk across to dinner.

North of the bridge — resorts and the bus station
Above the bridge, near where the minivans arrive, with the smarter riverside properties including Mandala Ou. Convenient for a 7am departure, further from the evening kitchens.

Or spend the night upstream in Muang Ngoi
An hour up the Nam Ou there is no road at all. Public boats leave Nong Khiaw at 11:00 and 14:00 and come back from Muang Ngoi at 09:00, so an overnight is simple. Rooms are basic, power can be limited, and it is cash only.
