PICK YOUR BASE
The heritage peninsula puts you inside the postcard and charges for it; one lane back, or across the Nam Khan, the same town costs half as much and you walk a little further.
The peninsula — inside the heritage zone
The finger of land between the Mekong and the Nam Khan, walkable end to end in about twenty minutes and closest to Wat Xieng Thong, the Royal Palace Museum and the night market. UNESCO rules cap new building, so rooms are small, old and the priciest in Laos.

Ban Vat Nong and Ban Xieng Mouane — one lane back
Guesthouse lanes just off the main street on the Nam Khan side, still inside the protected zone but noticeably cheaper. Five to ten minutes' walk from everything, and quiet once the market packs up around 11pm.

Ban Phanluang — across the Nam Khan
The far bank, reached by the seasonal bamboo bridge or the road bridge year round. Rural, riverside and the cheapest beds within reach of the centre; allow an extra ten to fifteen minutes each way and a torch after dark.

Check which village your room is actually in
Plenty of places sold as “Luang Prabang” sit 4km out by the airport or 12km out near the railway station, which means a tuk-tuk every time you want dinner. Ask for the ban (village) name and check it is on the peninsula side of Mount Phousi before you book.
