The province's Lao League 1 club plays its home games at Luang Prabang Stadium — one of only five top-flight sides based outside Vientiane. Crowds are small and tickets are cheap, but fixtures are publicised informally, so ask a guesthouse rather than hunting online.

An annual charity road race on 21km, 14km and 7km courses through and around the UNESCO town, raising money for children's causes in Laos. Entries go online well in advance and the town's beds fill for the weekend, so book both together.

Long-running Luang Prabang operator based in Ban That Luang, running kayaking on the Nam Khan, mountain biking in the surrounding hills, and multi-day trek-paddle-and-bike combinations including five-day routes north to Nong Khiaw.

The provincial tourism office lists several zipline operations around Luang Prabang, including a five-line circuit of more than 1.1km with suspension bridges at the top of the Kuang Si falls. All have weight limits and all shut in heavy rain.

Boun Suang Huea, usually in October, puts village crews on the Mekong at Luang Prabang and in towns down the river, with decorated boats by day and candle rafts floated at night. Free to watch from the bank; the date moves with the lunar calendar.
