No club, no stadium, no gym: sport here means the games villagers play in the cool of the evening, plus whatever you can do on a bicycle or in a boat.
No top-flight club anywhere near
Lao League 1 is a ten-club competition and most of it is played in Vientiane. The nearest top-flight side is Champasak Avenir, who play at the 8,000-capacity Champasak Stadium in Pakse, about three hours north — the only realistic option if you want to see a professional match while you are down here.
Petanque
The French left behind two things in Laos: baguettes and boules. Every village, including these ones, has a sand court, and games run in the late afternoon when the heat drops. Stand and watch for five minutes and you will usually be handed a set.
Kataw and volleyball at dusk
Kataw — sepak takraw, volleyball played with the feet and a rattan ball — and ordinary volleyball are what the nets in village clearings are for, and both start around 17:00 when the sun is off the ground. Spectating is expected; joining in is welcomed and briefly humiliating.
Walk or run the island at dawn
The only sensible time to move fast here is between about 05:30 and 07:30, before the heat and while the fishermen are out. A loop of Don Det on the dirt paths takes roughly an hour at a walk; take water, because nothing is open yet.
Cross to Don Som
The island west of Don Det, reached by hiring a boatman for an hour or two, has no bars, almost no guesthouses and a track you can ride a hired bicycle along past rice fields and buffalo. Agree the pick-up time before you get off the boat, and take the bicycle with you.
