Where the Mekong braids into hundreds of islands before Cambodia. Hammocks, bicycles, a rusting French railway and vast waterfalls.
Khone Phapheng Falls
The largest waterfall by volume in Southeast Asia, on the mainland side. Around 55,000 kip. Go by tuk-tuk or on a half-day tour.
Li Phi (Somphamit) Falls
Thundering rapids on Don Khon, a 25-minute walk from the bridge. The currents are lethal - look from the walkways, never swim.
The French railway bridge
The colonial bridge linking Don Det and Don Khon, plus a rusting locomotive: remains of the only railway Laos had until 2021.
Cycle Don Khon
Flat, quiet lanes past rice fields, temples and river beaches. Bicycles rent for a couple of dollars from any guesthouse.
Sunset boat on the Mekong
Longtail trips at dusk through the island channels. There are no dolphins left in Lao waters, so ignore any tour that promises them.
Bus from Pakse to Nakasang
About 3.5 hours by public bus for roughly 40,000 kip, or 2.5 hours by minivan, then a 15-minute longtail to the Don Det pier.
Overnight bus from Vientiane
Sleepers run to Pakse overnight, arriving around 6am, with onward connections to Nakasang the same morning. No railway south.
Overland from Cambodia
Buses from Siem Reap or Phnom Penh via the Nong Nok Khiene border. Handle your own forms and ignore the unofficial health desk.
Best time to go
November to February: dry, warm, low water, and the best cycling and waterfall access.
Cheapest months
May to September. Green and very quiet, but rain and high water close trails and beaches.
Priciest & busiest
Christmas, New Year and Lao New Year in April, when Don Det's few good rooms sell out.
Morning
Coffee in a hammock over the water, then hire a bicycle before the heat and ride south over the old railway bridge.
Late morning
Loop Don Khon: Li Phi Falls, the locomotive, the temples and the quiet lanes on the island's far side.
Lunch
Riverside lunch on Don Khon - river fish, a curry or a Mekong-view sandwich - then a shaded siesta.
Afternoon
Tuk-tuk out to Khone Phapheng Falls, or swim off a Don Det river beach if the water is low.
Evening
Sunset from a boat or the bridge, then dinner and drinks on Sunset Boulevard. Everything shuts early.
