River crossing vigil
From July, wildebeest mass on the banks then plunge across. Timing is luck, so allow several days rather than one.

Stay in a conservancy
Naboisho, Olare Motorogi, Ol Kinyei and neighbours cap vehicles at sightings and permit night drives and guided walks.

Arrange through your camp rather than at the gate, so the fee reaches the community rather than a middleman.

Getting there
Fly from Wilson Airport
Daily light aircraft from Nairobi Wilson take about 45 minutes to the Mara airstrips. Baggage limits are strict.
Drive from Nairobi
Five to six hours by road via Narok. The last stretch is rough, so a high-clearance 4x4 and a local driver are worth paying for.
Reserve or conservancy?
The national reserve has the river crossings. Surrounding conservancies cap vehicles and allow night drives and walking.
When to go
Best time to go
July-October for river crossings and dry-season game viewing across the reserve.
Cheapest months
April-May long rains: lush, empty and far cheaper, though some camps close.
Priciest & busiest
August-September peak migration, when camps book out a year ahead.
If you've got one day
Morning
Leave camp at first light for the dawn drive, the best hours for cats still on the move.
Late morning
Bush breakfast on the plains, then track a pride or follow up on lion calls heard overnight.
Lunch
Back to camp through the heat for lunch and a long siesta. The wildlife is resting too.
Afternoon
Head out again around 4pm as the light drops and the predators begin to stir.
Evening
Sundowners on a ridge, dinner under canvas, then the stars and the sounds of the plains.
Nearby & day trips
Lake Naivasha
On the drive back to Nairobi: hippos, birdlife and a walking safari on Crescent Island, which has no big predators.
Loita Hills
Forested highlands east of the Mara used for multi-day guided walks with Maasai guides. Remote and rarely visited.
