Where you sleep in Amboseli is really a decision about the 24-hour gate fee: inside the park you wake up on the swamps and pay for every night, outside you drive in each morning and pay again.
Inside the park — the Ol Tukai area
The lodges clustered around Ol Tukai sit in the middle of the park beside the swamps, so you can be out at first light without a gate run and back for lunch in ten minutes. You pay the conservation fee for each 24 hours you stay and rates are the highest in the ecosystem.

Kimana and the eastern conservancies
East of the park along the Kimana wildlife corridor, on community land rather than national park. Walking and night drives are allowed here and beds cost noticeably less, at the price of driving in through Kimana Gate every morning.

The Namanga side, west of the park
The western approach off the Namanga road towards the Tanzanian border. It is the shortest run back to Nairobi and the quietest side of the park, but you are furthest from the meltwater swamps where the elephant herds actually gather each day.

Work out the fee clock before you book
Practical tip: the conservation fee buys 24 hours from the moment you enter, so staying outside and driving in on three separate days costs three full adult fees. Two nights inside the park often works out cheaper than three nights outside it.
