The things worth doing in Petra, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
High Place of Sacrifice
A stepped climb to a Nabataean altar above the city and down the Wadi Farasa side. The official guide rate is 35 JD for the short route.
A second day
The two-day ticket is 55 JD against 50 for one. Five dinars is the difference between seeing Petra and rushing it.
Jabal Haroun
Eight hours out to the shrine on the mountain traditionally identified as Aaron's tomb. Licensed guide required, at the official 150 JD rate.
Umm al-Biyara
Six to eight hours up onto the flat-topped mountain above the basin, at the official 120 JD guide rate. Steep, exposed and rarely busy.
Wadi Sabra
Eight hours south to a Nabataean site almost nobody visits. The official guided rate is 150 JD and you will have the trail to yourself.
