The sport here is walking uphill in heat: one desert marathon in September, two of the Jordan Trail's best sections, and no professional club within three hours.
Petra Desert Marathon
Albatros's race through the desert around Petra, 5 September 2026 and 4 September 2027, with a full 42.195km and a 25km ultra half. Fields are small and the heat, not the terrain, is what people underestimate.
Jordan Trail: Dana to Petra
72.4km over four days with 2,825m of ascent, dropping out of the Dana Biosphere Reserve, across the Araba valley and climbing back up to arrive at Petra from behind. The section National Geographic singled out.
Jordan Trail: Petra to Wadi Rum
91.6km over five days, 2,354m up and 2,427m down, past Jebel Haroun, the Coloured Canyon and the Humeima ruins. The stretch from Humeima to Shakriya is the longest run without water on the whole trail.
No top-flight football in the south
The ten clubs of the Jordanian Pro League play in Amman, Irbid, Salt and Mafraq. From Wadi Musa the nearest league ground is Amman International Stadium, about three hours north.
The season decides everything
The site is walked, not driven, and July and August are unmanageable after mid-morning. The Jordan Trail Association points at February and March for the south, with September to mid-November the other window.
