Jerash is a working provincial town with a Roman site attached, and it closes early. Amman is an hour away and most people go back.

Late July into early August: music, dance and poetry staged in the theatres and the plaza. Tickets go through Jordanian ticketing sites rather than the gate.

About 7km out of town, with a pool, which is the nearest thing to an evening here. Hadrian's Gate is the cheaper option nearer the site.

Pine and oak woodland south-west of the site, with cheap camping. Cold at night and properly dark, which is the point of going.

Nothing in Jerash advertises a bar and the hotel options are thin. If you want a drink after the ruins, that decision was made back in Amman.
