Shinsekai and Dobutsuen-mae
Former day-labourer lodging houses turned hostels sit around Shinsekai, giving Osaka the cheapest beds in the country. Rough at the edges, well connected, entirely usable.
What a day costs
Budget ¥6,500–10,000, about $45–70: dorm ¥2,500–4,000, takoyaki and standing-bar food ¥2,000–3,000, subway ¥600–1,000, one attraction ¥800–1,500.
Metro passes and night buses
The Enjoy Eco Card gives a day of unlimited subway and city bus travel; overnight coaches to Tokyo undercut the shinkansen by a wide margin.
Free by day
Osaka Castle Park grounds, the Shitennoji temple courtyard and the neon crush along Dotonbori cost nothing beyond the walking.
