The anchor of the Hip Strip on Gloucester Avenue: restaurant and bar by day with a waterslide and trampolines into the sea, then the ClubVille nightclub upstairs running 10pm to 4am with DJs. Regular nights include Thursday ladies' night and a Friday 5-9pm happy hour, and they run free daytime transport from most large Montego Bay hotels for groups of four or more.

Open-air seafood restaurant and bar on Howard Cooke Boulevard, going since 1986 and the one place locals and visitors reliably mix. Normal hours are 11am-11pm Monday to Saturday and noon-11pm Sunday, but Friday is the reason to come: the Pier Pressure party runs to 4am.

The mile of bars, jerk stands and shops along the seafront, officially renamed Jimmy Cliff Boulevard though everyone still says Gloucester Avenue. You can walk the whole thing, which makes it the only part of Montego Bay where a night out does not need a taxi between each stop.

Out on the Freeport peninsula rather than the strip, open 9am to midnight, and a much quieter drink than Gloucester Avenue. It is a members' sailing club that runs J-22 races and hosts the finish of the Pineapple Cup, so call ahead on +1 876-979-8038 before turning up as a non-member.

A thin strip of public sand at the end of Kent Avenue under the airport approach, free to use, and where people go for the sunset before the strip fills up. Bring your own drinks — there is no bar on the sand itself, and planes pass low overhead every few minutes.
