The best-preserved nuraghe complex on the island and a UNESCO site, a Bronze Age tower surrounded by a village of stone huts, about an hour's drive north of Cagliari. Visits are guided only and run by Fondazione Barumini Sistema Cultura, so check their hours and rates before driving out.

A large sea cave in the cliffs west of Alghero, run by the city of Alghero. You reach it either by boat from Alghero's port or on foot down a long staircase cut into the cliff face; rough seas close the sea entrance, so check conditions the same morning.

A national park of granite islands off the north-east coast, usually visited on a day boat from Palau or La Maddalena town. Access to parts of the park is regulated and some beaches are closed to landings altogether, so check the park's own rules before you book a trip that promises them.

A pebble cove under a limestone pinnacle on the island's east coast, reached on foot from the Golgo plateau above Baunei or by boat from Cala Gonone and Santa Maria Navarrese. Walker numbers are capped and there is a small access fee collected at the trailhead.

The walled upper town, with the Bastione di Saint Remy terrace and the cathedral, sits above the port and is free to wander; the Poetto beach runs roughly 8 km along the edge of the city and is a short bus ride from the centre. Together they make a full day without a car.
