THINGS TO DO
The things worth doing in Naples, from the obvious landmarks to the ones locals actually rate.
Naples spread along its bay with Mount Vesuvius behind
Herculaneum
Smaller than Pompeii and better preserved, with carbonised wooden furniture, upper floors and mosaics still in place. Open 8.30am to 5pm, ten minutes on foot from Ercolano Scavi station.
Certosa di San Martino
A Carthusian monastery on the Vomero hill with cloisters, a Baroque church and the Cuciniello nativity scene, plus the best view in the city from its belvedere.
Catacombe di San Gennaro
Second-century burial galleries under the Rione Sanità, run by a cooperative of young people from the neighbourhood who lead the tours themselves.
Mercato di Porta Nolana
A working street market of fish, produce and contraband cigarettes near the station. Loud, wet underfoot and entirely unstaged.
Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte
The Farnese picture collection in a Bourbon hunting palace — Caravaggio's Flagellation, Titian, Bruegel — set in a large wooded park above the city, reached by bus or a long uphill walk.
