PICK YOUR BASE
Milan is small for its reputation and the metro covers the rest, so the choice is really about what you want outside the door at 9pm.
Brera and the Duomo — the walkable core
Everything on the one-day list is within twenty minutes on foot, and the pedestrian lanes behind the Pinacoteca hold most of the good lunch tables. You pay for it: this is the most expensive bed in the city and rates roughly double during the fashion weeks and Salone del Mobile.

Navigli and Porta Genova — canal-side, and loud until late
On the canals, with M2 at Porta Genova and a tram to the centre in fifteen minutes. Cheaper than Brera and the obvious base if you plan to be out late, but Alzaia Naviglio Grande is full and noisy every summer night, so ask for a room off the water.

Isola and Porta Nuova — towers on one side, neighbourhood on the other
Under the Bosco Verticale, on M5 and M2 at Garibaldi, which is also where Italo and some Frecce stop. The railway splits it: rooftop bars and new-build hotels to the south, ordinary residential Isola with cheaper rooms and wine bars to the north.

Stazione Centrale — cheap, connected, and not somewhere you linger
The budget beds cluster here because M2 and M3 both stop and the airport trains and coaches all arrive. Practical if you are moving on quickly; the streets immediately east and north of the station are scruffy after dark, so pick a hotel on the Via Vitruvio side rather than Via Sammartini.
