The Medici collection strung along two corridors above the Arno, ending with Botticelli, Leonardo and Caravaggio. Open Tuesday to Sunday 8:15am to 6:30pm and closed Mondays, 1 January and 25 December; a ticket bought on the day is 25 euro and one booked in advance 29 euro, and the ticket office shuts at 5:30pm.

Michelangelo's David stands at the end of a purpose-built tribune, with the unfinished Prisoners lining the approach; the rest is Florentine panel painting and a room of musical instruments. Closed Mondays and entry is by timed slot, so book rather than turning up.

The cathedral itself is free to enter, but the dome climb, the baptistery, Giotto's campanile, the crypt and the Opera del Duomo museum are covered by the Brunelleschi, Giotto and Ghiberti passes sold on the Opera's own site. The dome is over 400 steps with no lift and needs a reserved time slot.

The Medici garden behind Palazzo Pitti, terraced up the hill with an amphitheatre, a grotto and long cypress avenues. Open from 8:15am with closing between 4:30pm and 7:10pm depending on the month, shut the first and last Monday of each month; 10 euro on the day, 13 euro booked ahead, or 22 to 25 euro combined with Palazzo Pitti.

The city's working town hall since 1299, with the Salone dei Cinquecento and the Medici apartments upstairs. The Arnolfo Tower walkway is included in the museum ticket rather than sold separately, but it is closed to under-6s, not advised if you have vertigo or heart trouble, and shut whenever it rains.
