PICK YOUR BASE
A small centre where almost everywhere is walkable, so the choice is really about noise, price and how close you want to be to the station.
Inside the viali — the porticoed core
Everything from Piazza Maggiore out to Porta Saragozza is walkable under cover, and the whole of it is a camera-enforced limited-traffic zone, so arrive without a car. You pay for the address, and on the streets off Via del Pratello you hear it until late.

The university quarter
Via Zamboni, Via Petroni and the streets around Piazza Verdi: the cheapest beds inside the walls, the loudest nights, and completely dead from mid-July to September when term is out and the bars shut with it.

Bologna Centrale and Bolognina
Five to fifteen minutes' walk north of the centre, straight onto the high-speed platforms and the airport monorail. Less charming, noticeably cheaper, and the right choice if you are using Bologna as a base for Modena, Ferrara and Ravenna.

Check the fair calendar before you book
Trade fairs and congresses at the Fiera take the city's whole hotel stock and multiply the rates — Cersaie in September, Arte Fiera in winter, and the Davis Cup from 24 to 29 November 2026. Shift your dates by a week and you can halve what you pay.
